Abstract
The role of teachers and the parents has a crucial influence on the students in the educational success, especially the parents on their children. Students’ behavior matters a lot during the learning process in the classroom because, with few problems in their minds, the students won’t be able to concentrate in the classroom, which ultimately brings down their academic performance. At this juncture, parents should be taking equal roles as teachers to mold their children to make the educational process productive and fruitful by collaborating with teachers (Hue and Li, 2008). On the other hand, teachers should also collaborate and communicate well with parents for the benefit of the students as it will enable students to acquire physical, emotional, and intellectual support in their learning processes (Digital Promise, 2014). Every comment that the parents and teachers give to the students influences their behavior, as they likely share their views and can get encouraged which ultimately makes them feel at home in the classroom (Hue and Li, 2008). At the same time, the teacher will also be able to create supportive parents through building relationships with them.
A Plan of Action for Miss Lee
As per the scenario shared by Hue & Li (2008), the situation mentioned in his write-up is the case of emotional shift due to some domestic reasons, computer games addiction, and peer pressure that Siu Ming is experiencing in the classroom. If Siu Ming is neglected by Miss Lee, he may face serious problems in the future. Therefore, immediate intervention from Miss Lee is necessary for which the teacher should immediately contact the parents to help him because it was noticed that Siu Ming has suddenly started staying quiet in the class which is the indication that he lost interest in the study. Below are the strategies and interventions that the teacher should immediately consider.
Meeting with the Student
Firstly, as soon as Miss Lee notices such action from Siu Ming, she should not ignore him because it is a serious issue that will hamper him in the long run, and may also become emotionally affected. The first intervention that she should make is to call the boy separately and talk with him so that the boy feels safe to express the reason why he is not showing interest, being the performing student before (Gordon, 2021). During the course, the teacher should listen well to the reasons expressed by Siu Ming to grasp all the information so that Miss Lee can find some ways to help him. The teacher should ensure that he is not alone, instead, he should feel that he is supported.
Seeking Guidance from School Counselor or Referring to the Counselor
After getting the information from Siu Ming about the problem, Miss Lee should seek assistance from the school counselor on how to help Siu Ming so that he can concentrate on his studies like before. According to BLIS (n.d.), school counselor knows well about how to correct students academically, socially, and emotionally for personal development. The teacher, after seeking guidance from the counselor, should provide necessary support to the student so that they understand well about themselves in a healthier manner. If it doesn’t work, Miss Lee should let the student talk with the counselor directly for necessary support because as per GoodTherapy (2001), they can help students resolve personal or interpersonal problems.
Parents Involvement
If all the advice from the teacher and counselor doesn’t change Siu Ming, Miss Lee should instantly proceed to contact his parents to discuss the matter and help him, collaborating with them. According to Pelvin (2019), he stated that involving parents in solving their children's problems is a big advantage for the school. It is understood that parents are most engaged with their full-time jobs but collaborating with them enables the teacher to make parents feel that they are sharing the responsibility in grooming their children to promote good behavior in the classroom (Hue and Li, 2008). She can schedule the meeting with the parents in the school and she could also involve the school counselor in sorting out the way forward to help the student recover from the pressure he is undergoing. The teacher can seek help from parents to assist him in improving the changing character. This would enable the teacher to help the boy through parental and counselor's joint efforts and in return, Siu Ming would start in his study and restore his behavior with academic success.
Changing Seating
On the other hand, Miss Lee can change his seating in the classroom making him sit with identified students from the class who are trustful and honest and associate them with Siu King. This would enable others to help him to regain his confidence and refocus by encouraging him to refocus. The peer can play a vital role in changing the behavioral and emotional aspects of students. Tullis and Goldstone (2020) stated that peer influence can benefit students in many ways, especially in learning and studying with increased confidence and accuracy that would ultimately make them gain educational merits.
Giving him Responsibility in the Classroom
Miss Lee can make him sit in a group of mixed-ability students to give him a definite role so that due to his active involvement and focus on the group, he can gain strength and can identify his abilities, which gradually will lead him to refocus and gain confidence. Miss Lee should be constantly focusing on the behavioral change in him, to help him work well while in the group through constant reinforcement, constructive feedback, and encouragement.
Constant Engagement and Change in Lesson Pattern.
Miss Lee can engage him constantly by asking questions during the lesson so that he remains engaged and alert throughout the lesson. On the other hand, the main reason can also be due to boring lessons. Miss Lee should change her lesson pattern and make her lesson engaging and interesting so that he gets motivated to learn. Motivating students to learn is an important aspect of any meaningful lesson.
Conclusion
Any sort of problem
should be dealt with immediately in the classroom. Many a time, the lack of
interest from students can be due to various reasons. The teacher should
intervene immediately to solve the problems in the class for better learning to
take place. The teacher should never stop trying to help students concentrate
and learn in the classroom.
